^Lot 5101 HOUSTON DEPOT CONFEDERATE INFANTRY CARTRIDGE

BOX. 8" x 6.5" x 2", brown leather cartridge box with large, embossed CS & Houston Texas Ordnance Department cartouche, dated 1864. This is the rarest and best marked of all Confederate cartridge boxes. Box has survived in beautiful condition, complete with single tin and nicely inscribed by soldier "J L. Whittenburg" on inner flap. Capt. John L. Whittenburg (1841-1905) entered service October 1861 as captain in 27th Texas State Militia, his 4 younger brothers all served as NCOs or enlisted men. This box and his photograph sold in next lot have remained in family till now. There are only 2 other surviving cartridge boxes of this pattern known. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: research on Whittenburg family. Whittenburg family were early Texas settlers and prominent Florence, Williamson County, TX pioneers. CONDITION: very good and complete.
